Apparition of Freddy Jackson, 1919

Photograph © Sir Victor Goddard, 1975

This photograph was taken in 1919 by a retired R.A.F. officer named Sir Victor Goddard. The photo is of Goddard’s squadron that served in World War1 aboard the HMS Daedalus.

Two days before this photo was taken, Freddy Jackson, an air mechanic, was killed by an airplane propeller. Freddy’s funeral was held on the same day that the picture was taken.

Members of the squadron recognized and identified the face as being that of Freddy Jackson. Others say that it is simply an imperfection on the film that bears resemblance to the dead air mechanic.
